When are the application forms available?
Every year for the batch commencing in July, the application forms are available on this website from January.
I have appeared for class XII exam this year. The results are not yet declared. Can I still fill up the form and appear in TMISAT?
Yes. You can fill the form leaving the space for class XII marks blank. The class XII marks are required to be intimated by fax or online as soon as the results are declared. Candidate will become ineligible in case he/she scores less than 60% marks in PCM and the Form Fees in such cases will also be non-refundable.
Which foreign examinations are recognised as equivalent to +2 stage qualification of Indian boards?
The Association of Indian Universities has given directives for equivalence of foreign examinations to Indian examinations. Click here for details.Candidates from International Board should submit an ‘Equivalence Certificate’ from AIU along with other documents mentioned in application form.
I am appearing for IMUCET, do I still have to fill the TMI form??
Yes.
What is the syllabus for TMISAT?
The test is based on 11th and 12th CBSE standard Physics and Mathematics syllabus. As this is online objective type test, there are no previous year question banks available.
How many questions are there in the test?
There are 80 questions altogether. 25 questions each in Physics & Mathematics and 10 questions each in Analytical,Logical Reasoning and General Aptitude of 1 mark each.
What is the duration of TMISAT?
The main test is of 90 minutes duration followed by behavioral assessment of 30 minutes.
I have a limited bandwidth internet connection. Will it affect the entrance exam?/ What are the technical requirements to access the course?
Yes.The Candidate should have the following recommeded devices/facilities:
- 1.Desktop/Laptop with 4 GB RAM, i3 Processor
- 2.Operating System – Windows 10 and Above
- 3.Webcam with a Microphone
- 4.Good dedicated Internet Connectivity with a minimum of 10 Mbps

Can I appear in TMISAT in April/May as well as in June?
No. You can appear in the test only once in a year.
When are TMISAT results declared?
Marks scored in the test are seen immediately on the screen after completing the test.
When are the interviews conducted?
Normally, interviews are conducted on the same day as that of TMISAT and at the centre itself.
Are CET / IIT JEE marks considered for admission?
No.
Do I have to appear in IIT exam for admission in TMI?
No.
I have secured less than 60% marks in PCM, but aggregate is more than 60%. Am I eliglible for admission?
No. The eligibility is at least 60% in PCM group.
I have completed B.Sc. degree. Am I eligible for admission to B. Tech. ME or B. Sc. NS?
You will be eligible for application in either of the programmes if you are less than 21 years on 1st Sept. of the year of admission and you have secured at least 60% marks in PCM group in 10+2 exam.
I have completed Diploma in Engg., can I apply for the courses in TMI??
No. The admissions are based only on 10+2 marks.
Does the Institute conduct GME course?
No.
Is there any management / NRI quota?
No.
Medical Fitness
When is the Medical Test conducted? Can I get it done from my local doctor?
The Medical Test is conducted after the online test and needs to be done by a DGS approved doctor only. List of Medical Practitioners approved by D G Shipping as on 3-Jun-2023
Is correction in eyesight by laser surgery allowed?
Yes, if it corrects your vision to 6/6 without glasses.
Fees and Scholarships
How are the fees to be paid?
The fees have to be paid semesterwise in February / August each year. No cash is accepted.
How can I get educational loan?
TMI degree courses are eligible for educational loans disbursed by banks. You may approach any bank of your convenience, including the following banks who have pre-approved the TMI degree courses:Axis Bank,Bank of Maharashtra,Corporation Bank,HDFC Bank,State Bank of India.
Are there any scholarships available?

Programmes
Are the courses approved by the government?
Yes. Both the courses have the approval of Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India. They also have the approval of Maritime Port Authority, Singapore. To see all our Accreditations, please click here.
What is the difference between B.Sc. Nautical Science and Presea (DNS - IMU) course?
This is alternate avenue to join Deck side Officer stream. DNS - IMU course is of one year duration. The student completes 18 months of sea service and appears for Second Mate's examination. He has also to appear for 3rd, 4th and 5th Semester examination conducted by IMU. On successful completion of all examinations, he will be awarded B.Sc. Nautical Science degree by Indian Maritime University. TMI inducts 120 company sponsored students in this program which commences early August each year. One has to appear in IMU entrance test. After applying for B. Tech. Marine Engg. course, can I change the choice to B. Sc. Nautical Science or vice-versa?
Yes, you can do so till the time of personal interviews. However your vision has to be 6/6 for admission in B. Sc. Nautical Science course and you have to clear the eyesight test conducted by the MMD.
What is the difference between Marine Engg. and Nautical Science courses?
Marine Engg. course trains you for the engine side of the ship while the Nautical Science course trains you for the deck, navigation and cargo handling side.
Which course is better – Marine Engg. or Nautical Science?
Both courses lead to rewarding careers in shipping industry. It is individual choice to work on the deck or engine side.
What is the difference between the salaries of Marine Engineers and Deck Officers?
Engineers as well as Deck Officers (Navigation) earn almost equally.
Is the profession safe for girls?
Yes, there are many successful woman seafarers across globe of Indian and foreign nationalities as well. Over the years more than 50 girls have joined TMI.
Campus Facilities
Is staying in hostel compulsory? Is there a separate hostel for girls?
Yes. Both the courses are compulsorily residential courses. Girls do not have separate hostel, however, a separate wing has been created in one of the hostels.
Are students allowed to have their vehicles on campus?
Students are not allowed to keep four / two wheelers on campus. Bicycles may be used.
Are mobile phones and personal laptops allowed on campus?
Mobile phones are allowed on campus except in the academic area. Personal laptops are allowed. Majority of the hostel area has wi-fi connectivity.
Can we visit the campus to see the facilities?
Yes. The working hours are 0900 hrs - 1630 hrs from Mon. to Fri. and 0900 hrs to 1230 hrs on Saturdays. You may visit the campus preferably with prior appointment. Campus tours are conducted when parents/candidates are called on campus for interviews in June.
What are the sports facilities on campus?

Internship & Placements
Are placement interviews done on campus?
Yes. Most of the globally renowned shipping companies come to TMI campus for selection of students for both engine and deck sides. Such tests / interviews are normally held between second and third year of the programme. As per our experience, about 90% of eligible students find placements by the time they finish the third year of the programme.
Is there any connection between internship and final placements?
Yes. Onboard internship leads to final placement in the same company. Change of companies is normally not encouraged at early stage of career.
Is there any stipend paid during the internship period? If yes, how much?
Yes. All the shipping companies pay stipend during the onboard internship period. The amount varies from company to company. At present, stipends during internship vary from USD 300 per month to USD 900 per month.
Which companies visit campus for selection?
A large number of companies visit campus every year. For details please see the Internships & Placements section of this website.
Is the placement guaranteed?
Placements are related to performance. Over the years, all eligible TMI graduates have secured placements in well known companies by the time they finish third year of the programme.
Are there any shore job opportunities for TMI graduates?
Yes. There are shore based job opportunities in any industry associated with engines, boilers, hydraulic systems or process control machinery. It is not necessary for engineers to join ship after the course. Some students, though small in number, have joined shore jobs as Design / Seismic / Maintenance Engineers or have taken up jobs as Trainee Surveyors. Nautical as well as engineers also have openings in Chartering / Ship Brokerage firms.
How long can one serve in Merchant Navy?
As per current DG Shipping regulations, subject to medical fitness, personnel upto 65 years of age can work onboard ships.
